Wiping film evaporator for efficient solvent removal.
A Wiping Film Evaporator (also known as a thin-film or wiped-film evaporator) is a glass-based evaporation module where a rotating wiper blade spreads liquid into a thin film on the heated wall, promoting rapid evaporation of volatiles. This design is especially beneficial for thermally sensitive materials, as it minimizes residence time and maximizes heat transfer.
• Design: cylindrical body with rotating wiper blades to spread liquid film
• Heating: jacket or shell heating with thermal fluid
• Seal: mechanical or dynamic seal for wiper shaft
• Vapor path: short path to condenser to reduce thermal load
• Material: borosilicate glass for glass sections and PTFE or corrosion-resistant materials for wipers and seals
• Operating temperature: suited to solvent volatility (adjusted lower for sensitive materials)
• Utility: heating fluid, cooling condensers or chilled water, vacuum capability
• Capacity: modular scale (lab to pilot)
Because detailed numeric specs are not publicly published, verify film thickness, throughput, motor speed, heat flux, and condenser sizing with manufacturer data.
• Concentration of heat-sensitive compounds (aromatics, pharmaceuticals, natural products)
• Solvent recovery or purification in high-boiling or viscous streams
• Removal of low-volatility impurities while preserving product integrity
• Laboratory and pilot-scale distillation of specialty chemicals
• Integration within technical glass packages as a high-efficiency evaporation module
Because of its gentle and efficient separation, it is preferred where conventional distillation would degrade product.
